Refresher

Dorge stood naked under the shower and asked for forgiveness, as he did every morning. This was the part of the day he was hardest on himself, and he wondered why. Was toweling off the start of some resignation that whistled out from him as the day went on? Was he not only naked before the universe but before himself as well?
The water scorched and frothed against his skin, soaking it red and smooth. He looked down for the blood swirling around the drain, or at the very least, dirt, but there was nothing. He snorted and blew a rope of clear snot towards the drain, landing distinct against all the other noise.
He turned away from the nozzle and pinched the water from his eyes. Looking down, he matted away the hair that had grown over his ranking. One day it was going to fade, he thought, tracing the bold black characters with his index and middle, a gesture he sometimes caught himself doing while standing in line for coffee.
Twisting the water off he immediately began drying himself: Arms; hair; chest; back; feet; calves; legs, then wraps the towel around his waist.
Then the lights in the refresher blink and then they go out and then Dorge breathes, "Kriff. Kriffing Kriff."
He shouldn't complain. At least the water was hot. But standing in the dark waiting for something else to blink out wasn't too fun. Maybe it'll be the artificial gravity and he'll get a concussion against a bulkhead. Maybe they're being boarded. Maybe he's dead.
The lights blink back on and he catches his reflection smiling at him.
He also catches something he had written with his finger on the glass a few days ago: Welcome to Stars End, Dreg.
