Je'beth gorhyrun tofeeezen Bep!*

I'm just going to touch on something and leave you to it, Reader. We're going to talk about a quote from Star Wars that tends to cause confusion, and we ain't even get'n in to the shit Yoda says.

Ok, in Episode V Han Solo shouts, "Then I'll see you in hell!" just as he rides his tauntaun out into certain death. We all know why he's going out there and what causes him to say it, but some of you get caught up on the word hell.

So...there's a realm of eternal suffering for the sinning multitudes of Star Wars just like there is for us?! Well. I really can't say if there is or isn't. But, many, many cultures believe there is such a place. Or at least have a concept of being judged in the afterlife, at which time they'll probably exaggerate how many times they ladled soup out for the poor.

So, does Han have demons and fire and country music in mind when he shouts out "..see you in hell!" No, I would say not. Han's probably referring to the hell he was brought up with on Corellia, his home planet.

Then why does he say hell? Well, he doesn't. Han isn't speaking English at all.

Just stay with me.

According to the Star Wars Roleplaying Game Revised Core Rulebook,  Han is speaking Basic. Yes, I imagine it's similar to the Common that is spoken over in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.

What is Basic? Well, my guess is that it's a pidgin language that has it's own set of rules and sounds. A pidgin language is something that borrows from several different languages until it sounds pretty distant from the source material but just about everyone gets the jist. Creole is a pidgin language.

That's also why you don't see any writing in the movies, the audience wouldn't be able to read it. Yes, you can see the displays on Luke's X-Wing in some scenes and some readouts on the Lambda Class shuttle, but...can you read them? Right.

So, why is it that Chewbacca still sounds like...that? Well, he isn't speaking Basic, he's speaking Wookie. If a character speaks in a manner in which you understand to be English, assume they're speaking Basic.

If they're speaking Basic, why do we understand it as English? Because C-3PO's translating it, dumbass.

*Damn, that bitch is hot!
